Urgent Action Needed to Evacuate South Sudanese Trapped in Sudan’s Conflict

The Global Campaign and Emergency Humanitarian Response urgently calls on the international community, regional bodies, and humanitarian organisations to take immediate action to evacuate and assist South Sudanese civilians trapped in the escalating conflict in Sudan.

Since the outbreak of war in April 2023, South Sudanese nationals have faced targeted violence, restrictions on movement, and humanitarian neglect. The recent Kanabi Massacre, where dozens of innocent South Sudanese were executed, has underscored the dangers faced by those still stranded. Reports continue to emerge of both warring factions—the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—hunting down South Sudanese, accusing them of supporting opposing sides, while thousands remain displaced without basic necessities.

We demand urgent action to:

  1. Ensure Safe Evacuation Routes – Governments and humanitarian agencies must work together to provide safe corridors for South Sudanese civilians escaping the war.
  2. Increase Humanitarian Assistance – Emergency aid must reach those stranded in Sudan, including food, medical support, and shelter.
  3. Protect Vulnerable Groups – Women, children, the elderly, and students must be prioritised for evacuation and assistance.
  4. Hold Perpetrators Accountable – The targeting of South Sudanese civilians must be condemned, and those responsible for atrocities like the Kanabi Massacre must face justice.

We call upon the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations (UN), and the Government of South Sudan to intensify diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to ensure that no South Sudanese is left behind in Sudan’s warzones.

The time for action is NOW. The international community cannot afford to stand by while South Sudanese lives are lost.

Yet, even in these bleak moments, the community clings to its humanity, doing what little they can to ensure that no one is forgotten.
