AU Condemns Killing of South Sudanese Nationals in Sudan; Humanitarian Groups Urge Protection

The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned the killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan, calling for immediate accountability and protection of civilians caught in the ongoing conflict. The statement follows reports of targeted violence against South Sudanese refugees and migrants amid escalating hostilities in Sudan.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the AU Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, denounced the attacks, urging all parties to respect international humanitarian law and safeguard civilians. “The African Union is deeply concerned by the loss of innocent lives and calls for urgent measures to ensure the protection of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan,” Mahamat said.

The incident, which reportedly took place in [location], resulted in the deaths of [number] South Sudanese, with many others injured or displaced. Witnesses and aid groups have described the situation as deteriorating, with growing risks for South Sudanese communities seeking refuge from the violence.

Following the AU’s condemnation, international organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Human Rights Watch, have echoed calls for immediate intervention. UNHCR spokesperson [name] stated that the agency is working to assist displaced South Sudanese and is urging Sudanese authorities to provide safe passage for those seeking to return home.

“We are witnessing a worsening humanitarian crisis,” [name] said. “Civilians, particularly refugees and migrants, must not be targeted.”

The Government of South Sudan has also expressed deep concern, with officials calling for cross-border cooperation to protect its citizens. South Sudanese Foreign Minister [name] stated that diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the safety of nationals in Sudan.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations are scrambling to respond to the needs of those affected. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have increased emergency aid efforts, but access remains a challenge due to security concerns.

Advocacy groups, including Act4SouthSudanese.org, are urging the international community to step up efforts in ensuring the safety of displaced South Sudanese in Sudan. “We need immediate action to prevent further loss of life,” said Mr. Nyieer. “The world must not turn a blind eye to this crisis.”

The AU has called for an independent investigation into the killings and urged all parties in Sudan’s conflict to respect human rights and international law.
