A petition signed by close to 4 thousand individuals from over 50 countries has been submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, demanding an urgent investigation into alleged targeted atrocities against South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madani.
The petition follows reports of grave human rights abuses committed after the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) took control of Wad Madani from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in January. Evidence, including disturbing visual documentation, points to extrajudicial killings, torture, and other inhumane acts allegedly carried out by SAF forces against South Sudanese civilians. Advocates say the violence constitutes crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
Press Release On Submission of Petition for Independent Investigations 24-20-2025 (427 downloads )Wad Madani has long been home to a diverse population, including South Sudanese who remained after South Sudan’s independence or sought refuge from conflicts. Despite being civilians with no ties to armed groups, they have reportedly been singled out for violent persecution. Petitioners say these actions must be investigated and those responsible held accountable.
The petition called on the Fact-Finding Mission to launch an independent and comprehensive investigation into the atrocities, ensuring that evidence is preserved for future accountability. They demand that perpetrators and patterns of abuse be identified, and that clear recommendations be issued to prevent further violations. Furthermore, they urge the Mission to work in collaboration with regional and international justice mechanisms to strengthen efforts toward accountability.
The petition further urged the international community to highlight the issue in upcoming Human Rights Council sessions and take decisive action to end impunity.
South Sudanese voices across the globe are mobilizing against these crimes and pledging to stand with those still trapped in Sudan. The Global Campaign & Emergency Humanitarian Response for South Sudanese in Sudan aka act4SouthSudanese has been set up to do just that as it continues to monitor the situation, advocate for justice, amplify the petition’s demands and mobilise the urgent humanitarian response and international intervention.
The petition remains open for additional signatories, and the latest count can be accessed at : https://chng.it/c8vCCBmCLQ.
